What really counts is on the INSIDE

Our society is weight obsessed. We are constantly forced to look at ourselves, and compare our bodies to the perfectly sculpted ones of the rich and famous.  How is it physically possible to get to the gym, eat well, hold down a full time job, keep a family running, all while having a perfect slim body complete with 6 pack abs? I’ll tell you the answer…. SOMETIMES ITS NOT.

It took me a long time to realize, that we have to be realistic with the bodies that have been given to us. You know that friend who eats anything she wants, and still looks amazing in a bikini right after downing a large burger and fries? Yea, she was born that way. So, while you nibble on carrot sticks, regretting the fact that you had a bite of your husbands pizza at lunch, she can indulge while never gaining a pound.

Thats all well and good for her, but lets take a look INSIDE. Looking good does not directly equate to being HEALTHY. In fact, lots of “Skinny” people have really poor eating habits. Most importantly, it is how we feel as a result of what we put into our bodies. If you put junk into your body, your body is going to feel like junk. Plain and simple.

Substitutions are Key to having a healthy body.

Here is one of my new favorite substitutions.

                                                                    Cacao Quinoa ICE CREAM

makes about 3 servings

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 packet Sambazon acai berry smoothie packet (optional)
  • 1 cup coconut milk (carton)
  • 6oz (1/2 cup) 0%fat greek yogurt (or any substitution yogurt)
  • 3-4 tbs cacao powder
  • stevia to taste
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup quinoa
  • 1 TBS gojii berries
  • 1 TBS cacao nibs

Blend all of your except Quinoa, gojii and cacao nibs in a blender until smooth. Transfer liquid to a tupperware and add in the remaining ingredients. Place in the freezer for about 3 hours (I recommend stirring about every 40 min if you can). ENJOY!!!

Working for that SUMMER body

These past few weeks, I have notice that my regular work out classes seem to be getting just a bit more packed. It’s just a little more difficult to get my favorite bike at FLYWheel, and my usually spacious Body By Simone class has become a seriously popular dance party. Today, I realized

ITS TIME TO SHAPE UP FOR SUMMER!

Now I get it. Winter is hard. It is hard to drag yourself out of bed to get to the gym on a snowy morning. It is hard to choose a healthy salad, when you could have those warming comfort foods. Well, WINTER IS OVER!!!

Losing weight is NOT just about working out: In order to lose weight, you have to eat right. Actually, 80% of weight loss is about the types of food we eat. It’s time to cut back on the pasta, amp up veggie consumption, and choose  Fresh fruit over Fresh baked cookies (sorry about that.)

DRINK MORE WATER:  Drinking tons of water truly aids in weight loss. Often times, when we think we are hungry, we are actually dehydrated. Water flushes out excess sodium, which decreases bloating and puffiness. Water is AWESOME… DRINK IT!

CUT BACK SODIUM: Sodium is one serious offender. Overly salty foods make us look heavier than we actually are! Often times, our bodies hold on to “water weight” and excess fluid because of high sodium intake. Get rid of the bloat and opt for fresh or dried herbs over salt.

EXERCISE: MOVE YOUR BOD! So many people have desk jobs, and spend most of their time sitting in front of a computer. We are meant to be mobile. Our muscles crave challenge. The hardest part about working out is getting started. Get up and get moving! Try for at least 3-4 times a week.

Whenever I am tired, and would rather stay in bed, I try to remember

No one ever said “Wow, I regret working out today”.
